PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide methods for producing equol-containing compositions substantially free of allergens. SOLUTION : Disclosed is a method for producing an equol-containing composition comprising the steps of : (1) processing an isoflavone with an enzyme that converts the isoflavone to an aglycon; (2) culturing an anaerobic microorganism in a culture medium containing the aglycon prepared in the step (1) to convert the aglycon to equol by the anaerobic microorganism; and (3) collecting the equol-containing composition containing equol formed in the step (2) from the culture medium.
