PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide pharmaceutically acceptable suspensions and nanocrystal shape distributions, which include novel gold nanocrystals with surfaces substantially free from organic impurities or organic films. SOLUTION : The novel gold nanocrystals have surfaces substantially free from organic impurities or organic films, and the surfaces are "clean" relative to surfaces of gold nanoparticles made using chemical reduction processes that require organic reductants and/or surfactants to grow gold nanoparticles from gold ions in a solution. The invention further includes the use for conditions resulting from pathological cellular activation, such as inflammatory (including chronic inflammatory) conditions, autoimmune conditions, hypersensitivity reactions and/or cancerous diseases.
