PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a novel method of treating disorders such as weight loss and lean muscle loss caused by chronic inappetence in non-human animals such as companion animals and livestock. SOLUTION : A method of treating weight loss in companion animals selected from dogs, cats and horses includes administering to a subject a capromorelin-containing composition of 0.5 to 7.5 milligrams per kilogram of body weight of the subject per day, at least once per day for at least 30 days. The capromorelin binds growth hormone secretagogue receptors (GHS-Rs) in the hypothalamus of the subject to stimulate the subject' s hunger independent of release of growth hormone.
