1314321 Safety harness K L AUTOMOTIVE PRODUCTS Ltd 28 July 1970 [28 April 1969] 16280/69 Heading A3V A safety harness 13 for restraining a child on a vehicle seat, comprises at least one safety strap 1 adapted to be secured to fixed anchorages in the vehicle to provide a first portion 2 extending over the seat squab from a first anchorage 3 below the seat squab to a second anchorage 4 behind the top of the seat squab, and a second portion 5 extending over the seat squab in spaced relationship to the first portion 2 between third and fourth anchorages 6 and 7 respectively below the seat squab and behind the top of the seat squab, an adjustable fastening device 9 arranged on each of the first and second portions adjacent the anchorages below the seat squab, two first body restraining straps 15, 16 adapted when in use to pass over the pelvis of the child and each respectively engaging at one end an adjustable fastening device 9 substantially at right angles to the first and second portions and connectable together at their other ends by means of a quick-release coupling device 20, and two further body restraining straps 17, 18 each adapted when in use to pass over the shoulder of the child and respectively connected at one end, e.g. by sewing 19, rivetting, clipping or stapling, to a first body restraining strap adjacent the coupling device, the other end of each further body restraining strap being connected to the first and second portions so as to extend in parallel spaced relationship, or being connected to a third intermediate portion 8 of the safety strap which interconnects the first and second portions and extends parallel to and adjacent the top of the seat squab. A single safety strap 1 may be provided in saloon cars, which includes the first, second and third portions, but for an estate car without a rear seat two separate parallel safety straps 2, 21 and 5, 22 may be used with a further strap portion interconnecting the two straps as a third portion. Two-slot slide buckles 14 may be provided for adjusting the lengths of the straps as in Fig. 1. Each adjustable fastening device 9 preferably comprises a flat, rectangular plate 10 of metal, plastics, or reinforced plastics having two parallel slots 11 to receive the width of strap 1 and a further slot 12, at right angles to the parallel slots, to receive the width of another strap, the edges of the slots and the plate being smoothly rounded. Alternatively, as in Fig. 3 (not shown) the two safety straps (2' ), (5' ), extending to second and fourth anchorages on the vehicle floor, may cross diagonally adjacent the top of the seat squab. In this case the two further body restraining straps 17, 18 may extend in parallel spaced relationship and be respectively secured to one of the straps (2' ), (5' ). A common anchoring bolt may be provided for the safety harness 13 and an adult safety belt. A cushion may be provided, secured to the first body restraining straps and/or the safety straps by tapes, for the child to sit on, and a further cushion may be provided to be positioned at the child' s back.
