Aromatic hydrocarbons are separated from mixtures with other aromatic hydrocarbons by countercurrent extraction with HF/BF 3 in the presence of a diluent under conditions such that (1) the BF 3 /HF mole ratio of the withdrawn HF extract is 0à02-0à20, (2) the concentration γ of aromatic hydrocarbons in the hydrocarbon phase at the HF extract withdrawal section of the extractor has a value below 0à3, (3) γ and the mole ratio # m of the total hydrocarbon/BF 3 extract in the HF extract substantially satisfy a curve similar to the γ-# equilibrium diagrams provided, and (4) the reflux ratio of extract product is 0-0à2.
