A handheld computing and input device (10) that may be held and operated with one hand includes a handheld housing having a main body portion (11) which is easy to grip in one hand and a lid portion (12), and a scanner (13). In one embodiment a large real estate display (15) is carried by main body portion (11) and a full keyboard (23) is carried by lid portion (11). A hinge (14) movably mounts lid portion (12) with main body portion (11) such that the two can be moved by the operator between open and closed positions. In the closed position, device (10) may be readily placed in and carrier by a holster. Trigger buttons (16A, 16B) carried in main body portion (11) allow operation of scanner (13) with either hand.
