The stop for holding a motor vehicle hatch (1) open has a prop cylinder strut (4) which is electronically controlled to lock it in position. The strut can have an electromagnetic or magnetorheological brake (9). The brake can operate on a gas strut. The brake can be controlled automatically or by a manual switch.
